Monique Lhuillier Spring Summer 2013

Sea, sands and ocean blue inspired Monique Lhuillier for SS2013 to craft those wonderful gown full of beads and tulle. There is a lot of tulle here, perfect for a cocktail event, because it wraps around your figure effortlessly. A trip around the Mediterranean gave rise to this collection so she chose immersive digital prints with aquamarine colours and pearly looks for the dresses.

The subjects were aquatic in nature, from fish scales to an oversized koi fish and it wasn’t just about the dresses. There were slim white pants manufactured of crepe georgette that fronted a turquoise scale print, and it looked very curvy because the dresses were wrapped around the hips and around the knee. An ink-blue tank dress had a fluttering hem that was propped up like an art deco, designed with a mirror wing photograph all across.

Peplum was used widely, from strapless, belted tops to wavelike curves that swooped out from the waist and ran across the legs for well-fitted leather dresses. Even though it was fun, flirty aqua fashion for Lhuillier, there was still a strongness about all of them, even in the sequinned and gold-dusted frock that gave out an illusion of shimmering coral covering it all.

The fashion was held on a Saturday evening, and the models strutted out on the catwalk with hairstyles as exact replicas of long-mermaid styles, slicked back once and wavy at the other end. The prints included all kinds such as those of a crane, sea shells, ocean waves, and the colours were free-spirited of the watery kind, be it grey, white, or black. The cuts, meanwhile, were smart silhouettes such as fitted jackets, kimono-sleeve blouses, tailored pants and shorts.

The stunning gowns were form-fitted evening-wear, but it was also like that for a mermaid-tail dress, in sensuous silk chiffon. The leather was in laser-cut, and the jacquard was for short jackets, cap-sleeve dresses, and there were also really shiny metallic shorts, resembling a full-moon gleaming high above the rippling ocean waves.

Embroidery was prominent for this Spring/Summer giving out dazzling embellishments that swirled and curved all over the gowns, sometimes just like the rippling of beach sands. The LA-at-heart American fashion designer sure knows how to put on an inspiring and unique show!
